Codecademy is free interactive online learning platform that teaches users how to code in a variety of languages. It is catered to learners who are completely new to coding and people who are looking to upgrade their knowledge base to meet the ever changing demands of the workplace. Codeacademy's offerings can be summed up into four categories: coding foundations, computer science, data science, and web development.
All courses are free and self-driven; users go at their own pace. Each tutorial guides the learner by providing instructions, opportunities to code along, hints, and lots of positive encouragement. As learners progress through the course, they can earn badges for their achievements. The website has a forum that encourages collaboration; users can ask questions and the coding community will troubleshoot together! |
THE USER EXPERIENCE
After a short tutorial to get one's bearings around the website, users can start to choose from a variety of courses. The course page indicates how many hours are likely to be spent learning, how many people have taken the course, and if there are any recommended prerequisites that should be taken before beginning. Once the start button is clicked, the page displays a lesson panel, instructions to engage in the skills taught, an interactive panel for the learner to write code, and a right panel that displays what the code will look like in action. In this way, all courses on Codecademy are highly engaging as users can immediately see the power of their code.
The above is an introductory course on HTML. The very first lesson introduces what HTML is and gets users to code right away.
MISSION
Codecademy is an education company. But not one in the way you might think. We’re committed to building the best learning experience inside and out, making Codecademy the best place for our team to learn, teach, and create the online learning experience of the future. Education is old. The current public school system in the US dates back to the 19th century and wasn’t designed to scale the way it has. Lots of companies are working to “disrupt” education by changing the way things work in the classroom and by bringing the classroom online. We’re not one of those companies. We are rethinking education from the bottom up. The web has rethought nearly everything - commerce, social networking, healthcare, and more. We are building the education the world needs - the first truly net native education. We take more cues from modern tech innovators in creating an engaging educational experience than we do from the classroom. Education is broken. Come help us build the education the world deserves.
