RATIONALE FOR ANALYSIS
I chose Codecademy for this Analyst Report as I start to feel "outdated". When I first began teaching seven years ago, I was astounded that my older colleagues couldn't use Microsoft Excel and didn't know how Cloud worked. I watched, frustrated, one day as a colleague's computer crashed, permanently, and he cried in horror that he had lost all his lessons that he had been working on for the year. Had he not been so reluctant to change, to learn about Cloud service, all this turmoil could have been prevented. At that time, a thought occurred to me that my time would come, that there will be a time when I am ignorant of a new technology, causing me to lose out on opportunities to enrich my teaching
That time has come, and much sooner than anticipated. It has not even been a decade since I started teaching! How many students today can code? My school is implementing a Flex block into our school schedule next year where students can sign up to attend tutorials around the school. While the Flex block committee brainstormed ways to logistically run the block, one teacher chimed in that his student can probably create an App to solve our problem. I was so envious because that is something that I cannot do.
Coding has become an essential skill in today's world. I often think, if I knew how to code, would I be able to create simulations in my chemistry classes? Would I be able to put together a much more efficient course website for my students? How many teachers in the district would benefit from coding lessons for professional development as opposed to attending yet another theoretical talk with no practical implications for the classroom? Codecademy provides an exciting opportunity for teachers to stay relevant, and it is free, so public school teachers need not worry about funding.
